Ingredients
- 1 cup elbow macaroni (uncooked)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Optional garnish: chopped parsley or extra cheese
Directions
- Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil. Add macaroni and cook according to package directions; drain and set aside.
- In the same pot, melt butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk for about 1 minute to form a smooth paste.
- Slowly whisk in the milk and cook until the sauce thickens, 2–3 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and stir in cheddar cheese (and Parmesan if using) until melted and creamy.
- Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder if desired.
- Stir in the cooked macaroni until well coated.
- Serve warm, topped with extra cheese or parsley.
